The rivers of Kerala have played a
key role in the formation of the Backwaters.
Of the 44 rivers flowing in the state, 41 flows to the West and other
three flow to the East. The Rivers, which originate from the Western Ghats and rush
in to the Arabian Sea, are all rain-fed. Most of them can be navigated up to
the midland region and provides an economic means of transport for boats,
ferries etc.-"Kerala Holiday Packages"
Periyar River –Kerala "Kerala Holiday Packages"
The longest river and one with the
largest discharge potential in Kerala, Periyar is one of the few perennial
rivers in the region. The Marthandavarma branch of Periyar flows southwards,
before draining in to the Vembanad backwaters at Varapuzha.- "Kerala Holiday Packages"
The Pamba originates in the
Western Ghat at an altitude of 1650 metres and flows through Ranni,
Kozhanchery, Tiruvalla, Chengannur, Kuttanad, Karthikapally, Ambalapuzha taluks
and finally empties in to the Vemband Lake, Kuttand, an important rice
cultivating area in Kerala gets water for irrigation from Pamba."Kerala Holiday Packages"
The Kallada River is one of two
major rivers that flow through the Kollam district. It travels for 121 km,
flowing through Punalur, Pathanapuram, Kunnathur and Kallada before ending at
Ashtamudi Lake. The Chalikkari river also joins Kallada a little downstream and
the two flow westward, before falling into the Ashtamudi Lake."Kerala Holiday Packages"

My First Impression Of The Best State InIndia – Kerala
shared by Anita Hendrieka Dijkstra
As most of you know by now I was invited by Kerala Tourism ona blogger press trip. I was welcomed with open arms into Kerala – ‘Godsown country’, with flowers and a personalised sign. I think I could getused to airport welcomes like this and now everywhere I go I will be expectingroses! So, what are my first impressions of this Indian paradise?
I have noticed in the last week of beinghere, people are so friendly and always smiling. I know we areexperiencing 5 star luxury right now and you would expect this kind of thing inthese resorts, but even out of the nice hotels and onto the streets or canalsof the backwaters, people are more than happy to be waving and saying hello toyou. Maybe it has something to do with the natural beauty that surroundsthem!
I backpacked 6 weeks from Delhi to Mumbailast year and the constant hassling can get overwhelming if you are not used tothis sort of thing. Here, I have had not one person come up and try sellme something or shout ‘rickshaw, rickshaw!’, NOT ONE. From my experienceso far, this would be the perfect introduction for newbie’s into India! As a backpacker it can be a struggle and some people don’t think of coming toIndia a relaxing holiday but if you would like to take things a little slowerthen come here, it’s perfect!
I feel like all I have done is eat and eat,and eat. The food here is more seafood based than the North and Iactually prefer the cuisine down here! Kerala is known as the land ofpalm trees so coconuts are very much a staple for food, skin and hair, and manyother uses. Just some of my favourite dishes so far have been the Putta (coconut
rice) with squashed bananas – a popular breakfast option, and the PaladaPayasam which is a dessert usually made with rice ada, milk, sugar and ghee. A traditional meal for the Kerala region is served on a banana leaflike the picture above.
The nature is beautiful and this place is soclean! I love nature so to travel through Kerala is like walking into atropical paradise for me. Palm trees, beautiful beaches and wild animalsare all things you can expect. I even got to see WILD elephants which issomething I thought I would never tick off my bucket list in India!

A child's dream that haunts me to
this day: a tree house! Who has neverdreamed of having one in the yard so they can play for hours and sleep afterwatching the stars? I remember that distant cousins had one, and once I went to visitthem I was dazzled! Just as I stayed when I came to an amazing eco resort in
South India and discovered they had wood suites up in the trees, much morebeautiful than my best dreams could draw.
It isthe Vythiri Eco Resort , which is in theState of Kerala and has been voted the best eco resort in all of SoutheastAsia. Encrusted amidst a dense rainforest, do not expect WiFi or TV on thetop of your tree. But for a wonderful bed, a jacuzzi and an incredibleview. You climb many steps on a wooden staircase to your suite. Andyou come across a real luxury!
Each ofthe tree houses was built by indigenous tribes with materials found in theregion and uses solar energy and natural water that comes from the top of themountains. They are beautiful, romantic, charming. For me, hosting mychildhood dreams.

Kerala, India - Colors From Nature And God's Own Country
shared by Barbara Rotella
Hi everybody!
Here is the first post dedicated to my trip to India! Actually I started writing when I was still there, but for lack of time I could not publish it before! I leave my thoughts, hoping to were carrying there, among those magical scents and those colors!
Here I am in the middle of India , thanks to Kerala Tourism , specifically in the south, in an amazing place totally in another world physically andculturally. Here I am at last, after eight days, to block my thoughts, but this time not as the other days through a journal that will publish to return, but simply by following all the emotions running through my heart right now.
Phrase obvious but ever so true: v ivy another reality, it makes you change perspective , thoughts, emotions. These days, I did nothing but photograph everything , absolutely everything was spinning around, trying to fix the memory card are not those images but also those emotions . I have to say, India is a fantastic country . A paradise for those who love photography, another dimension for those who love nature. And as you know already with these two conditions, I can say that won me over completely.
The colors are everywhere.
Just walk down the street, look around, and you feel completely transported into a photography where the contrast is maximum, where the saturation is exaggerated where everything is music and confusion , but of the confusion that inevitably puts you joy and makes you smile . And the beauty is that it makes you smile without realizing it , because everyone around smile, women on the street, children at the bus stop, the men near the bacarelle (obviously colored), taxis that run from side to side , the bus with no windows that continually whizzing and it would appear in no particularorder, the horns echoing in the city, the cows crossing the road, elderly people sitting on street corners, even barefoot beggars, do not ask with bullying charity, but you they smile and they send you a greeting. And 'absurd to say, but I have never felt so "welcome" in a country, despite the many fears before we left! And everything, absolutely everything this mix can only be contagious , and convey this positive energy that you'd swear to be there for those roads .
And then nature.
Oh, my God, I have never seen such a lush and rich around a city, in the streets, in the markets, everywhere! What most leaves me speechless, is that for some reason also the largest city visited so far, s t seems has grown parallel to the nature that there was , and that therefore there is still around. It 'something sensational, you see houses, buildings, hotels, barracks, completely immersed in that nature so green , almost as if they were inserted right there by chance, leaving untouched nature around. Everything is so green and lush, and it seems that in the background there is a green card, and instead, just like the children of the more adventurous fantasies, which extends out of sight, is nothing more than that authentic and unspoiled lush: Giugla.
Hence the two main reasons why this country has conquered me immediately, and covering the photographs I can still feel you there in thosestreets! But there is still so much to tell and soon I'll get!
